How the JB Okpara Foundation is helping boys turn potential into purpose through education and skills development.
In many rural parts of Nigeria, young boys grow up with limited access to quality education, job opportunities, or vocational training. As a result, too many are forced into early labor, face unemployment, or fall into cycles of poverty that become difficult to escape.
At the JB Okpara Foundation, we believe that empowering young boys isn’t just about keeping them out of trouble — it’s about giving them the tools, skills, and confidence to build something better.
The Problem We’re Tackling
In places like Ideato South and surrounding regions, boys often drop out of school to support their families or because schools are under-resourced. With no clear path forward, many drift — unemployed, unsupported, and often invisible to the systems meant to protect and uplift them.
“I wanted to go back to school, but there was no money for uniforms, let alone fees. I thought I would never finish,” said Chukwudi, age 16, one of the boys enrolled in our empowerment program in Owerri.
What We’re Doing About It
Our Youth Empowerment Program, launching in March 2026 in Owerri, is specifically designed to:
- Train young boys in practical vocational skills, including carpentry, electrical work, welding, agriculture, and basic digital literacy.
- Provide mentorship and soft-skills training in areas like communication, leadership, and personal discipline.
- Reintegrate out-of-school boys back into formal education, where possible, through scholarships and school supply distribution.
- Partner with local businesses and artisans to offer internships and hands-on experience.
Why It Matters
When boys are given direction, support, and the chance to succeed — they do. We’ve seen this firsthand in pilot initiatives where boys who once felt hopeless are now earning money, supporting their families, and building their self-worth.
“They taught me how to wire a simple building and now I help my uncle on jobs. I feel proud when I can fix something on my own,” said Ebuka, 18, a recent program participant.
This is about more than skills. It’s about identity, dignity, and future possibility.
Our Long-Term Vision
This isn’t a one-time fix. Our goal is to create a scalable model of youth development that can be implemented in other rural areas across Nigeria — turning forgotten boys into trained, confident young men ready to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
With the right resources, these boys can become Nigeria’s next builders, leaders, and innovators.
How You Can Help
- Sponsor a boy: Cover training, tools, or school fees.
- Volunteer as a mentor or instructor: Especially if you have skills in trades or teaching.
- Partner with us: If you run a local business or training center.
Together, we can help boys move from the margins to the center of their own stories.
